Mongrel Motorsports, Elizabethtown, PA
Mongrel Motorsports is Dwight Varnes and Scott Loercher. Dwight is an insurance adjuster, and Scott is an architect for a company in York, PA. We are brothers-in-law who love cars and are usually working on something off-beat.  Our philosophy is fun cars at an affordable cost.  We think high dollar tuner cars are silly...who can afford them?  Our projects are real cars for the real world.
This web site focuses on Dwight's cars and projects. To see Scott's web site on Mazda Miata turbo, Mazda 323 GTX, Mazda Protege 5, Miata V8 and others, click here.

Why Mongrel Motorsports ?

It's actually a pretty simple answer.  Both Scott and myself, along with our respective spouses, are dog lovers.  All of our dogs (five total) have been 'recycled' from the local animal shelter.  With the exception of our Australian Shepherd, they are all mutts, mixed-breeds or mongrels.  Since a lot of the vehicles I work on tend to be mongrels as well (cobbled together from multiple cars or salvage parts) I thought the name appropriate for our pseudo-race team.
Our first adoption, Kellie the Shepherd-Husky mix, died from cancer prematurely on 8/21/00.  My race cars are always number 821 in her memory.
You can access pages about our dogs and adoption/rescue
1965 F100 pickup

Can't resist those American V8s. Official support truck of MMS. Kept mostly original but with some modern updates. Read the disc brake how-to!
1979 Austin Mini Mk IV

How can something so small be so much fun?  Brilliant design = great handling and a car that is far better than the sum of it's parts. Ours is only 848cc, but it's not just about speed, now is it?
Our newest projects, a pair of E30 BMW spec race cars!  Hitting the track in 2009.
Fiat 124 Spiders

I've owned several of these. Read about my restored car or learn all about 124's through the years with my Beginner's Guide.
Great cars that are still underrated.
